Cupping has been used for thousands of years in many cultures, including ancient Egypt, China, Greece, and the Middle East. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus from 1550 B.C. describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy for treating fever, pain, vertigo, menstrual problems, and other ailments. Traditional Chinese Medicine often uses fire cupping in conjunction with Acupuncture to balance Qi and help to release the Sha (blood congestion in surface tissue) While cupping techniques and tools have evolved over time the underlying philosophy has always remained the same.
When areas of the body are tight, whether from injury or overuse, the tendency is to favor the area and keep it still to avoid pain. This can cause "stickiness" over time, muscle can adhere to fascia, which can adhere to skin. Think of cupping as deep tissue massage in reverse. Whereas traditional massage compresses and lengthens muscle tissue, cupping pulls everything up and away through suction. This allows fresh, oxygenated blood to enter those areas of restriction, release adhesions, improve range of motion, and heal injury. It's time tested...and very effective when performed properly.
The suction level of the cups can be adjusted to each client's tolerance level, and good communication is essential in a cupping treatment. Cupping is an unusual feeling...it's hard to describe if you've never experienced it. However, there is no need to feel fearful or hesitant. Your therapist can cater your experience to your level of comfort.
Stationary cupping can also leave round, cup shaped, marks on the skin, though this is not always the case. These marks are harmless and will disappear on their own in a matter of hours or days.
